ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE COMEDIANS OF ALL TIME IS PATRICE O'NEAL!!!  (R.I.H.)

 

THIS GUY TELLS STORIES LIKE NONE OTHER, ALL WHILE MAKING ME LAUGH; DEEP, DEEP DOWN IN MY GUT.  WHEN THEY SAY "COMEDY IS MEDICINE", THIS IS CORRECT!

 

DURING HIS "ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM" COMEDY SPECIAL, HE TALKS ABOUT OVER 40 WORK ETHIC.

AS HILARIOUS AS THIS PIECE IS, IT IS A TOTAL 180 FROM HOW I TRULY FEEL OR OPERATE, AS A PERSON.  HONESTLY, GIVEN HOW CUTTING EDGE HIS COMEDY IS, I BELIEVE THIS WAS JUST POKING FUN AT HOW COMFORTABLE WE CAN BECOME AS INDIVIDUALS.  I WOULD NEVER KNOCK ANYONE IF THIS IS HOW THEY MOVE.  HOWEVER, THIS PIECE IS THE PERFECT SETUP FOR THE SUBJECT MATTER DISCUSSED IN THIS POST.

 

MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT TO PATRICE O'NEAL!  EVEN NOW, HIS LEGACY BRINGS JOY INTO MY LIFE, EVERY TIME I RE-WATCH ONE OF HIS VARIOUS SPECIALS, STAND-UP ROUTINES, OR INTERVIEWS.  THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH PATRICE!!! (YOU ARE DEFINITELY ONE OF THE PEOPLE I WISH I HAD MET, BEFORE YOU LEFT US.)

 

I TAKE AND EDIT PHOTOS.  DURING MY EDITING PROCESS, A VIGNETTE IS ALWAYS CONSIDERED.  WHEN DONE CORRECTLY, THESE SHADOWS CAN ENHANCE THE IMAGE DRAMATICALLY, BRINGING OUT THE BEST IN THE ART BEING CREATED.  THIS PROCESS GOT ME TO THINKING ABOUT MY LIFE; MY EXISTENCE.  WHY AM I THE PERSON I AM AND HAVE THE INTERESTS I DO?  WHEN I LOOK IN THE MIRROR, DO I LIKE OR RECOGNIZE THE REFLECTION MY EYES SEE?

 

DURING VARIOUS TIMES IN MY LIFE, THE ANSWER TO BOTH OF THOSE WAS EITHER “I DON’T KNOW WHY.”, OR A RESOUNDING “FUCK NO!”.  FUNNY THING ABOUT THESE VIEWS; OVER TIME, YOU’VE SEEN THEM SO MUCH IN YOURSELF THAT “THEY” BECOME THE NORM.

 

I EXISTED IN A MISERABLE STATE.

 

IT SUCKS TO EXIST IN A MISERABLE STATE, ESPECIALLY WHEN “MY CHOICES” PUT ME IN THAT PLACE.  I FELT AS THOUGH I WAS CONSTANTLY, WITHOUT A DAMN BREATHER...EVER, SHOULDERING ALL THE WEIGHT THAT LIFE THREW AT ME.  THIS CAN BREAK THE SPIRIT OF A PERSON, IF ALLOWED TO.

 

AS A CHILD, MY SIBLINGS AND I SANG IN THE CHURCH CHOIR.  WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT, YOU ASK?  IT’S IMPORTANT BECAUSE EVERYONE IS GOING THROUGH SOMETHING.  CHOIR REHEARSAL MADE ME FEEL WONDERFUL!  IT MADE US ALL FEEL WONDERFUL.  (THANK YOU MRS. BAKER, FOR EVERYTHING YOU POURED INTO US KIDS!!!)  THE POINT IS, SINGING MADE ME FEEL BETTER!

 

THE LESSON:

 

LEARN SOMETHING NEW AND PRACTICE IT, WHEN LIFE IS HEAVY ON YOUR SHOULDERS.  IT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER.  ALSO, YOU TEND TO DISCOVER SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT YOURSELF.  YOU ENRICH YOUR LIFE!!!

 

SOME TIME AGO, A FRIEND REFERRED TO ME AS A “RENAISSANCE MAN”.  ALTHOUGH I HAD HEARD THE TERM BEFORE, I HONESTLY DIDN’T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THIS IS AND HAD TO LOOK IT UP TO CERTAIN.  DURING MY RESEARCH, I RAN ACROSS AN ARTICLE WRITTEN BY JAMES BROOKS.  HE WROTE:

 

“BEING A MODERN DAY RENAISSANCE MAN DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE TO BE AN ACCOMPLISHED POET OR MASTER SCULPTOR. RATHER, IT MEANS BEING AS OPEN TO THE WORLD AS POSSIBLE AND EMBRACING ALL OPPORTUNITIES AS THEY COME YOUR WAY. IT MEANS KEEPING YOUR MIND SHARP AND YOUR BODY IN GOOD SHAPE, FOR THE MIND NEEDS A HEALTHY BODY TO ACHIEVE ITS FULL POTENTIAL. IT MEANS LEARNING AS MUCH AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN. IT MEANS TRAVELING AND SEEING THE WORLD, EXPERIENCING ITS PEOPLE, AND LEARNING ITS LANGUAGE. IT MEANS NOT BEING AFRAID TO BE WHO YOU ARE AND FEEL COMFORTABLE IN YOUR OWN SKIN.”

 

BASED ON THIS NEW FOUND UNDERSTANDING, I BETTER COMPREHEND WHY SHE USED THAT TERM.  LORD KNOWS I’M NOT AFRAID TO I TRY NEW STUFF!  MANY INTERESTS THAT I’VE INJECTED INTO MY LIFE CAME FROM TIMES WHEN I WAS IN DARKNESS; IN THE SHADOWS.

 

TODAY, I UNDERSTAND AND EMBRACE THOSE TIMES, BECAUSE I EVOLVE, BECOME STRONGER, PRAY MORE AND IN SOME CASES, ADD TO MY INTERESTS.  MY LIFE BECOMES MORE CLEAR AND RICHER.  (NOT TO MENTION MY TOLERANCE FOR BULLSHIT IS FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR LESS.  BULLSHIT FROM ANYONE; SOMEONE I LOVE OR NOT). 

 

SO, AM I A RENAISSANCE MAN?

 

WELL…I GUESS IN SOME WAYS I WOULD SAY YES.

 

 

NOW, I EMBRACE THE SHADOWS BECAUSE:

 

THE SHADOWS FORGE ME.

THE SHADOWS MATURE ME.

THE SHADOWS TEACH ME.

THE SHADOWS STRENGTHEN ME.

THE SHADOWS MAKE ME A BETTER TEACHER.

THE SHADOWS OFTENTIMES POINT ME IN THE DIRECTION OF MY LIFE’S NEXT GREAT INTEREST.

 

ALL OF THESE EXPERIENCES PERFECT THE DYNAMIC IMAGES THAT MAKE UP THE MOTION PICTURE THAT IS MY LIFE.  EMBRACING THE SHADOWS ALLOWS THE VIGNETTE AROUND MY DYNAMIC IMAGES TO PROPERLY ACCENTUATE THEM, SO THAT NOT ONLY IS MY LIFE MORE RICH, BUT THE LEGACY I LEAVE MAY ENRICH THE LIVES OF OTHERS.  THIS IS MY WAY OF LEAVING THE WORLD IN A BETTER STATE THAN I FOUND IT IN.  ALL THE WHILE, ENJOYING THE TIME I’VE BEEN AFFORDED BY GOD.
